Grade School Education Unit
Life Science Education
Sprout Jones is a comprehensive, hands on life science
education module designed to compliment and supplement
any life science curriculum. This 4 to 7 week module
consists of lessons directed around the growing of plants
in an inert / sterile growing media. Students develop
skills and learn by investigating:
- Tools used in a scientific inquiry. These tools include microscopes, tape measures, measuring cups, magnifying glasses, and computers for research and journaling for data recording
- Concepts, principles and processes of scientific inquiry:
- Question / Purpose – What, Where, Why, How, When
- Hypothesis – Possible answer to your question
- Materials – Identify and control Variables
- Procedure / Replication – Test hypothesis, retest for accuracy
- Results – Collect and record your data
- Conclusion – Decision made based on your data
- The stepping stones of life. Accomplished by comparing and contrasting plant cells vs.animal cells, and by identifying the characteristics of living vs. non-living things.
- Which are made of cells?
- How do they obtain and use energy?
- How do they grow and develop?
- How do they reproduce?
- How do they respond and adapt to the environment?
- How living things are classified into one of six kingdoms: Ancient Bacteria, True Bacteria, Protists, Fungi, Plants and Animals
- Living things and their surrounding environment. How plants and animals adapt.
- How growing a living organism in a soilless environment helps science and bio-technology.
- Plant biology and what a plant needs to grow. Examines how flowering plants produce food, the process of photosynthesis, and how plants use water, light, air, a base, and nutrients to survive.
- The life cycle of a plant. Explores seed germination, root development, stem structure, pollination, reproduction and seed production.
- The different types of ecosystems: desert, grassland, tundra, forest, and tropical rain forest.
- The effect of our changing environment and mankind's influence on ecosystems: pollution, housing, transportation, and energy usage.
Using the Sprout Jones unit in the classroom allows :
- Students to actually see seed germination
- Students to watch root development
- Student to learn the responsibility in caring for a living organism
- Students to complete a scientific inquiry
- Students to witness the complete life cycle of a plant
- Teacher to complete science standards for their curriculum
- Teachers to grow plants in their classroom. No large scale greenhouse is needed.
- Teachers and students to grow plants in the classroom with no mess, no bacteria and no insects.
- For insight into new growing technologies involving soilless medias and hydroponics.
Each Sprout Jones: Life Science Education Module includes:
- A comprehensive curriculum and lesson plans for the teacher and students, plus one (1) complete growing kit as listed below.
- Cost = $350.00
Each Student Growing Kit includes:
- 12 – student germination kits (4 seed cells)
- 1 – Teacher / germination kit (12 seed cells)
